2016.

meika&me

What a whirlwind of a year 2015 was!

I don’t know about you, but I feel like I blinked and the year was over. 2015 brought about many highs, as well as some lows, and I am now feeling excited to move into a new year and see what adventures lie ahead for me.

I feel I must also address that I have been M.I.A for a couple of months now. Between finishing my University degree, planning for my big move back home to Melbourne (did I ever mention I’ve been living in Townsville, North Queensland for the last few years?), temporarily moving in with my Granny-in-law who doesn’t have Wi-Fi, and dealing with the sad loss of a dear family member; I’ve been feeling a little misplaced.

But I’m back, and can’t tell you how natural it feels to be sitting at my laptop putting together this post. I certainly didn’t want to leave 2015 behind without taking a trip down memory lane, after all, December saw my one year blogging anniversary! So lets take a look back at the year that was and in case you missed them, here is the top 5 Meika & Me posts of 2015.

Spring Racing #2

When I started Meika & Me, I sought it to be an extension of myself, a place where I can share my dreams, my passions and my zest for life in a medium that allowed me to express my personality. This is very much still the case, and I have big plans for Meika & Me in 2016 involving new content, new ideas and of course, more than enough fashion, style and life to inspire your tastes.

Here’s to 2016 together!

Spring Racing. #2

Some of you may have seen my most recent post detailing my Spring Racing ensemble for the RSL Townsville Cup. Well, I’m back with part two!

I’m very lucky to have a gorgeous gal pal who allows me to style her, much like the many store mannequins I dressed during my time working in visual merchandising!

The reason for this part two piece is because style is unique and distinctive between individuals and this will give you two very different looks, both of which you may be able to draw inspiration from for your spring racing get up!

Top – Bardot
Skirt – Bardot
Clutch – Colette by Colette Hayman
Shoes – MissShop by Myer
Hat – Myer (this ‘Lack of Color‘ one is my pick for a similar option!)

For this look we chose a monochrome palette of black and charcoal grey. We matched this fine knit pencil skirt to a somewhat casual fedora, and let the black leather strap accent this spaghetti strap cropped top. To bring some light to entire outfit, we chose a neutral nude clutch bag and heels, and found this complimented it perfectly.

Renee was a little skeptical about wearing a fedora to the races, fearing that it may be too casual, but as you can see, it’s all about what you pair it with! If this isn’t channeling her inner Lara Bingle-Worthington, then I don’t what is. Sporting a low, messy chic bun also made the look feel more dressed up.

A big thank-you to my bestie Renee for allowing me to feature her on Meika & Me.

What do you think? Is this outfit your style?

Lust List. #3

It’s been a very busy couple of months for me. Between holidaying and the commencement of my last semester EVER at University (9 weeks to go, but whose counting?), I’ve barely had time to sit down and do what I love most; write.

But being busy has not stopped me perusing the Internet and magazines during every spare minute, and lusting over items to add to my overflowing and always growing wardrobe!

So, what is Meika & Me lusting over right now? I’m glad you asked.

The Midi-Heel.

Not quite a high heel and definitely higher than a kitten heel, I’ve labeled it the ‘midi-heel’ and I am loving this trend! The perfect shoe for Spring/Summer time and offers great versatility as the height allows it to be worn casually or more dressed up, depending your taste.

I personally love this pair from Sportsgirl, which is in a gorgeous pale tan colour, which compliments this season’s 70’s trend.

Imagine these sandals with a floaty floral dress, or even paired with a pair of light wash boyfriend jeans to add a more feminine touch.

Jo Malone London.

I am so glad that Jo Malone has finally made it’s way over to Australia. Stocked in both David Jones and Myer Melbourne City, Jo Malone offers an extensive range of ‘unexpected’ scents that are elegantly lush. The packaging is gorgeous and would look beautiful on any girl’s dressing table. I love the scent ‘Blackberry & Bay’, which is a vibrant fruity scent of blackberry, bay and wood.

Dior ‘So Real’ Sunglasses.

I’d actually have to win the lottery to afford these beauties, but that can’t stop a girl from dreaming right? These sunglasses have been doing the rounds lately on the blogosphere and Instagram, and their unique shape and large colour range are adding to their popularity. I personally love the pink colour, but they also come in black, clear, tortoiseshell and blue among many other colour combos. These sunglasses are a statement piece, but we’re thinking it’s definitely the right kind to make.

Mansur Gavriel Bucket Bag.

Another dreamy lust piece that is well out of my price range, but high on the want list. This bucket bag is the perfect handbag to suit any style. Made in Italy using Italian vegetable leather, this gorgeous bag can be customized by selecting the lining colour to best suit your taste. I personally love the black bag with the charcoal lining, but with the large colour range for the external leather and the lining, you really can create the ultimate bag for you!

Bali, Indonesia.

I’ve fallen in love.

Yes, it’s true. But it is not a person that has won my heart, but rather the Indonesian Island called Bali.

I’d always heard mixed reviews about Bali, with people likening it to vegemite; you either love it or you hate it. Maybe it’s because Indonesia has such a sentimental place in my heart after learning and loving the language for six years during High School, but I have only fond feelings for the place and am counting down the days until I can return. I actually won’t have to wait long to visit again, as my partner Jesse and I booked plane tickets two days after arriving home to visit Bali again in November. This will coincide with our 7-year anniversary, which makes the trip all the more special.

This was my first time overseas, and this trip has certainly enlightened the ‘travel bug’ in me. I travelled with a group of long time friends and we stayed for a week, splitting our time between Gili Trawangan and Seminyak. From the people to the culture, to the street markets and the architecture, this island is full of life and colour.

Here are a few of my favourite photographs from the trip:

Top Tips for Wearing an All Black Outfit.

I’ve made it no secret that Meika & Me is likely the number one fan of an all black outfit. My boyfriend often jokingly questions whether I’m off to a funeral when I appear sporting an all black ensemble.

It is classic, chic, slimming and flattering on all skin tones, which makes it absolutely no surprise that most women love to wear all black. But what makes an all black outfit interesting? What determines it looking depressed and morbid or fabulously chic?

I’ve come up with my 5 top tips to wearing all black errthing:

Play around with Texture & Fabrics

This is my number one tip for turning an all black outfit from blagh to beautiful. If you’re wearing cotton with cotton, there is nothing to break up the outfit, give it definition or brighten up the look. Instead, mix a cotton tee with leather trousers, black denim with a silk cami or add a lush knitted scarf or sweater. This tip is about mixing textured fabrics to create lift and a point of difference.

Play around with Structure

I love playing around with structured pieces, especially when paired with a nice pair of black heels. Structured tops, jackets, skirts and pants all work by offering shape to a look, which enhances the look by creating different proportions.

Play around with Accessories

This tip is by far the easiest to do! If you’re a little afraid of an all black outfit, or you’re feeling a little ‘widowesqe’, then play with accessories! It’s as simple as adding a statement bag (something like this would look gorgeous!), or a bold bright necklace. It could even be as simple as adding a hat or scarf in a grey or neutral tone. Accessories help to add a little fun to an outfit and will allow you to express your individual personality.

Play around with Layers & Lengths

I’m the first to admit that layering can be difficult to do. No, that’s not correct. Layering is simple to do, but hard to master! If done incorrectly, it can leave you looking a little frumpy and tussled. This tip involves playing around with lengths and layers in a way that will break up outfit ensemble and give height and shape to your body. For example, pair some high waisted denim jeans with a slightly cropped knit and then add a long duster coat and pointed boots or heels, which will work to create an elongated figure. Another tip could be layering a slightly longer button-up shirt underneath a thinner knit jumper.

Play around with Shades

Another easy but very effective tip! Add definition and light to your all black outfit by playing with shades. This is a little bit of a cheat because what are shades of black? Greys. Still, it’s effective and looks classic. Mix different shades of black and grey into your ensemble through actual clothing items or accessories, the choice is yours.

Identify Yourself.

One of the most courageous things you can do in life is identify yourself, know who you are, what you believe in and where you want to go.

Simple Comfort.

Simple Comfort.

Whiter Shade of Pale.

Question: is white on white as taboo in the fashion world as double denim?

I, for one, think something has to be said about the elegance and sleek appeal of a white on white outfit combination.

However, I imagine many might share my thoughts that it is a risky fashion statement! While screaming high fashion and ‘I undoubtedly have style’, the risk of spilling a splash of coffee down your front, sitting in bird poo or brushing up against a dusty fence makes me wonder if looking chic and sophisticated is actually worth the risk?

But just because I’m fashion liability when it comes to wearing white, doesn’t mean I can’t love the trend.

And boy, do I ever!

Style Crush. #2

It’s my favourite time of the month again (actually, I’m about a week late but with university exams just around the corner, I do hope you’ll forgive me). It’s that time of the month where I get to reflect and share whose style I have been crushing and perhaps give you a little inspiration for your wardrobe too.

This month’s feature has style icon status, and I’m sure I’m not alone in saying she is my eternal ‘Style Crush’.

It’s Sienna Miller.

A model, actress and fashion designer, Sienna is a jack of all trades so to speak. Whether she’s being snapped on the red carpet, featured in a magazine editorial or photographed by the paparazzi walking down the street doing every day things, she always oozes effortless style. Her fashion choices are laid back and relaxed, definitely leaning towards boho chic. She certainly isn’t afraid to push the boundaries and I admire her ability to pull off anything and everything she wears.

She’s brave in her fashion choices, and she always looks like a total babe.
