Summer Essentials.

Here in Australia, we are now smack bang in the middle of summer and boy, has it been a scorcher!

While I make no secret of the fact that my heart is happier in the cooler, winter months, I have a number of essentials to help me get through the warmer months! So, if you’re anything like me and counting down the days until the weather drops a few degrees, then maybe some of these items will help you combat the heat.

Light Clothing

During the summer months, I live in cotton dresses. I find them easy to throw on and go, no matter what I have planned ahead for the day; offering great versatility, while also being breathable and cool. Cotton is also easy to look after in terms of wash and care, making it the perfect everyday fabric. These are some of my favourite styles, and I have included an option to suit your preferred length; mini, maxi, midi. Perfect to throw on for a day at the beach, or worn to dinner and drinks with your ladies in the warm summer evenings.

Hats

I am a HUGE hat lover all year round, but particularly in the summer months. I have pale skin with lots of freckles and find that a long day in the sun will darken the freckles on my face, across my nose and cheeks. Hats are a fantastic way to be sun smart and stylish at the same time. My absolute FAVOURITE brands are Lack of Colour and Ace of Something, both offering a variety of colours and styles that are affordable and very high quality. Hats are a great way to add a different element to your outfit, and completely change the look of an ensemble. Any one of these bad boys will have compliments flying your way left, right and centre!

A Great Bikini

I must be honest; I struggle with this every summer. Unfortunately, like many other girls, I am very body conscious and as a big busted, big bummed, curvy size 12-14, I struggle to find bikini’s I feel entirely comfortable in. Unfortunately, it’s not the styles that are letting me down, but rather the sizes, which are often too big or too small around the chest or bottom. If you have any recommendations of brands that cater to this well, please let me know! Otherwise, here are some bikini’s I’m loving this summer.

Sunscreen

This should actually be number one on the essentials list, as being sun smart is important for maintaining healthy and youthful skin, and avoiding melanomas and other skin cancers. My go to is the Le Tan 50+ Coconut Lotion, which smells like a summer dream! This product doesn’t have that awful ‘sunscreen’ smell that is usually prominent, and if you are a coconut lover, you’ll go gaga for this; I promise you.

Roundie towel

These are adorable! Why would you have an ordinary rectangular shaped beach towel, when you can have one of these? While so many brands are producing round beach towels now, The Beach People are the original creators and offer 10 different prints to suit your tastes. Use them at the beach, a picnic in the park or lazing around in your backyard!

Sunnies

Another staple all year round, my sunnies tend to get more of a workout during the warmer months. I am an avid sunglasses collector and often prefer to buy cheap, in case I lose or break them (because who hasn’t done this before?!). I do have a pair of the Ray Ban Clubmasters and absolutely love them, but I live in constant fear that I am going to sit on them every time I take them off! I find I have a fairly universal shaped face, allowing me to wear many styles with ease, and I love to play around with different frames, lenses and colour combinations to add a different element to my outfit.

Primer

To ensure my make up stays in place and goes on smoothly, I love to use the POREfessional Face Primer by Benefit. I was wearing make up for years before I even considered introducing a primer into my make up routine, but when I discovered this product, I knew I was onto a winner. I wear this underneath my foundation, and find that it reduces the appearance of my pores, smoothes and softens out my complexion, while mattifying the skin and keeping my make up in place for much longer than without this product. I highly recommend giving this one a go.

Mattifying Powder

This has been a Holy Grail product of mine for a few years now. I have combination skin, but find I get shiny through my T-zone as the day progresses. To combat this, I like to use the Australis Fresh & Flawless Pressed Powder to set my liquid foundation, and as a touch up throughout the day when needed. This product is a 2-in-1 foundation and pressed powder, so can be used on its own as a very light coverage foundation.

Tan

I am a pale skinned girl who dreams of having a golden, sun kissed bonze tan naturally. Alas, I will forever be dreaming, as time in the sun usually results in the following cycle: white-pink-beetroot red sunburn-pink-white again. I’ve previously done a review on my favourite tanning product, which is the Loving Tan Deluxe Bronzing Mousse in Dark. Check out my review here!

Spring Racing. #2

Some of you may have seen my most recent post detailing my Spring Racing ensemble for the RSL Townsville Cup. Well, I’m back with part two!

I’m very lucky to have a gorgeous gal pal who allows me to style her, much like the many store mannequins I dressed during my time working in visual merchandising!

The reason for this part two piece is because style is unique and distinctive between individuals and this will give you two very different looks, both of which you may be able to draw inspiration from for your spring racing get up!

  thisonetoobloghatthis

Top – Bardot
Skirt – Bardot
Clutch – Colette by Colette Hayman
Shoes – MissShop by Myer
Hat – Myer (this ‘Lack of Color‘ one is my pick for a similar option!)

For this look we chose a monochrome palette of black and charcoal grey. We matched this fine knit pencil skirt to a somewhat casual fedora, and let the black leather strap accent this spaghetti strap cropped top. To bring some light to entire outfit, we chose a neutral nude clutch bag and heels, and found this complimented it perfectly.

Renee was a little skeptical about wearing a fedora to the races, fearing that it may be too casual, but as you can see, it’s all about what you pair it with! If this isn’t channeling her inner Lara Bingle-Worthington, then I don’t what is. Sporting a low, messy chic bun also made the look feel more dressed up.

A big thank-you to my bestie Renee for allowing me to feature her on Meika & Me.

What do you think? Is this outfit your style?

Bloggers to Fancy.

Every day I’m inspired by those around me and in my short time blogging, have gained an admiration for the love and support present in the blogging community. Blogging platforms like WordPress, Blogger and Tumblr offer the every day individual a public voice to speak openly on whatever topic they so choose.

Meika & Me is predominantly fashion focused, as that feels most at home to me. But, because there are SO many incredible writers, photographers, make-up artists and stylists on WordPress alone, I wanted to introduce a new feature to Meika & Me. ‘Bloggers to Fancy’ is exactly as the name suggests; it’s the bloggers to fancy, to crush, the bloggers of the moment. It’s the bloggers I am loving too much to keep quiet about!

The first featured ‘Blogger to fancy’ is someone very near and dear to me, and is not only my best friend but also the inspiration for my starting my own blog. She is fellow blogger and beauty queen, myBeautiFX.

 lithelmybeautifx

Lithel at myBeautiFX is a make-up and beauty lover who has incredible product knowledge. If I’m wanting inspiration for make-up looks, an honest review of the latest products to hit the market, or cheaper dupe alternatives to high end products, I will always check out myBeautiFX on her blog or Instagram. Her skillset extends far beyond your weekend winged cat eye look, and she uses special effects make-up to create incredible, life-like (and sometimes horrifying) looks that would be perfect for Halloween or any dress up party occasion.

Her words are sincere and sweet, and are a true representation of the girl behind them. myBeautiFX has an endearing quality about her that leaves you wanting to read more. I highly advise you visit her site and social media, if you haven’t already, and let her know I sent you.

I promise you’ll be inspired, just as I am.

Lust List. #2

Well, University exams sure do have a way of stripping every last morsel of energy from your mind and body, and leaving you longing for a nearer end. Alas, I am finished and have recovered my stress levels back to a normal state and am ready to enjoy my mid year break by doing, well, anything I want to do!

Being head deep into study, revision and exams left little time for perusing the stores, but study breaks (a.k.a. ‘stuff my face with all the food groups’ breaks) did allow me to keep an eye on online stores, other blogs, YouTube style gurus and even the odd magazine, and as a result my list of lusted items has grown.

You know the drill. Meika & Me’s Lust List is a place to share the trends, items and products I am lusting over and currently include:

Cut Out Boots.

I’m an avid boot lover and find myself wearing them all year round purely because of their versatility. These Wittner ‘Gabrie’ boots have been doing the rounds on social media for a couple of months now and it’s easy to see why.

Wittner ‘Gabrie’
$229.95

A unique take on the heeled Chelsea style boot, these ankle boots offer a subtle edginess to an outfit in a cool, geometric way. These cut out boots would look fab with some ripped at the knee skinny jeans, a baggy V-neck white tee and a leather jacket, or with a pretty floral bohemian maxi dress, fedora hat and aviator sunglasses for a Coachella feel.

They are a little on the higher price range; but considering they are leather upper and leather lining, they will likely last for years.

Grey.

I’ve made no secret about my preference for a monochromatic wardrobe, regularly leaning towards black and white hues. Lately, I’ve been finding myself drawn to grey pieces; winter coats, chunky knitted sweaters, cozy infinity scarves and V-neck tees for a different take on the staple white tee.

I find grey to be softer and a little romantic, when compared to black. I also feel it compliments blonde hair perfectly.

Grey on the top paired with black skinny jeans or a black leather skirt and you’ll have the perfect outfit to brave the Melbourne winter outdoors.

These are some of the grey items I’m dying to get my hands on:

Leather Skirt.

I feel like leather is one of those items that never really goes out of style, which is why many women find themselves with their mothers hand me down leather pieces from their 20’s.

I am absolutely loving the look of the leather skirt at the moment. However, my budget doesn’t always stretch that far and that is why I love that there are many vegan leather options (FYI vegan leather is essentially faux leather by a different name, made usually with polyurethane, cork, kelp or seaweed).

This Boss Orange skirt from ASOS is the perfect slim fit cut with a higher waistline, which is flattering on most shapes; particularly those with bigger hips and a booty like myself, as it accentuates the waist making it appear smaller. This skirt also has a unique jersey panel on the reverse side of the skirt making it a little different from your average black skirt.

Dress this up or down by coupling it with a white tee, denim jacket and a pair of low converse chucks for a casual weekend vibe, or pair with a silk camisole and strappy heels for a girls night out.

As always, I’d love to hear your lusted items.

Identify Yourself.

One of the most courageous things you can do in life is identify yourself, know who you are, what you believe in and where you want to go.

Simple Comfort.

Simple Comfort.

Whiter Shade of Pale.

Question: is white on white as taboo in the fashion world as double denim?

I, for one, think something has to be said about the elegance and sleek appeal of a white on white outfit combination.

However, I imagine many might share my thoughts that it is a risky fashion statement! While screaming high fashion and ‘I undoubtedly have style’, the risk of spilling a splash of coffee down your front, sitting in bird poo or brushing up against a dusty fence makes me wonder if looking chic and sophisticated is actually worth the risk?

But just because I’m fashion liability when it comes to wearing white, doesn’t mean I can’t love the trend.

And boy, do I ever!

Style Crush. #2

It’s my favourite time of the month again (actually, I’m about a week late but with university exams just around the corner, I do hope you’ll forgive me). It’s that time of the month where I get to reflect and share whose style I have been crushing and perhaps give you a little inspiration for your wardrobe too.

This month’s feature has style icon status, and I’m sure I’m not alone in saying she is my eternal ‘Style Crush’.

It’s Sienna Miller.

A model, actress and fashion designer, Sienna is a jack of all trades so to speak. Whether she’s being snapped on the red carpet, featured in a magazine editorial or photographed by the paparazzi walking down the street doing every day things, she always oozes effortless style. Her fashion choices are laid back and relaxed, definitely leaning towards boho chic. She certainly isn’t afraid to push the boundaries and I admire her ability to pull off anything and everything she wears.

She’s brave in her fashion choices, and she always looks like a total babe.

Lust List. #1

Being a university student on a part-time wage doesn’t really leave too many funds to splurge on those special items. As a fashion lover, I’ve spent many an hour perusing online retail stores, window shopping on my lunch breaks, marking pages in magazines and eyeing girls’ style choices in the street. I’m sure many of you can relate.

Not only am I a fashion lover, but I’m also a routine list maker. So, combine the two and you’re left with a girl with a long and constantly growing list of items she is dying to get her hands on!

The trends and items I am lusting over at present include:

The Backpack

The ‘Kelly’ backpack from Naked Vice is the perfect accessory all year round. It is 100% leather and retails for $189.95, which is a fabulous price considering the material!

Backpacks are such a practical option, and can be dressed up or down depending the occasion. I’ve spent years filling my tiny shoulder bags to the brim with everything from my purse, spare coins, books, make up, receipts and tissues – imagine the abundance of things you could fill into this!

Purchase item here: http://nakedvice.com.au/product/the-kelly-2/

The White Shirt

Every girl should own at least one white shirt in her wardrobe. From a versatility point of view, a classic white shirt can be worn from a day at the office right through to Friday night drinks with the girls.

I love styling a white shirt with skinny black jeans (the Topshop ‘Joni’ jeans are my favourite), boots and a fedora hat.

I’ve got my eye on the ‘Button Back Shirt’ from Witchery for $99.95. This shirt is part of the #whiteshirtcampaign in support of the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF). Buy this shirt, or any other in the OCRF range, and 100% of the proceeds to OCRF to fund further research into early detection, treatment and support for women suffering and their families.

As a woman with a family history of ovarian cancer, and having gone through a scary situation relating to female health myself, this is a cause I feel very passionate about. One woman dies every 10 hours from ovarian cancer so every dollar towards the fund will help!

Plus, not only will you look good in your stylish new wardrobe addition, you’ll have given back to such an important and special charity.

The Loafer

Loafers are definitely a love them or hate them fashion piece, and I am without a doubt in the former category, I can’t get enough! I love that they offer a masculine edge to any outfit, and also scream ‘chic’ and ‘cool’ at the same time. Another versatile wardrobe piece, loafers can be styled with skinny jeans and a t-shirt, a cute floral spring dress, or perfect for the office (no sore feet in this office, ladies!).

These Tony Bianco loafers are my pick and now I just need to decide between the pointed or the rounded toe! Which do you prefer?

The ‘Lob’

It seems every girl and her mother is jumping on the ‘lob’ (long bob) bandwagon, and I’m not far behind. Celebrities including Jennifer Lawrence, Rose Byrne, Vanessa Hudgens and Taylor Swift have even jumped on board, and now I’m sure that’s a wagon I want to be on!

celebrities-with-lobs-long-bob-hairstyles
Image sourced: www.teen.com

I’ve been back and forth with the idea of chopping off my locks for what feels like months. I’m a bit boring when it comes to my hair, naturally wavy (fluffy) hair that I straighten every other day, with a balayage because I’m too lazy to maintain my colour every 6-8 weeks, and often worn down, in a pony or a messy bun.

Chopping off my locks to a long bob length would be invigorating no doubt, so who knows? My next visit to the hairdresser might be goodbye hair, hello lob! We’ll just have to wait and see.

The Statement Necklace

I feel as though statements necklaces never really go out of style, and they can serve as an important feature to finish off any outfit. Most of my wardrobe choices are quite monochrome, often baggy and always comfortable, so wearing a little (or a lot) of bling around my neck makes me feel more pulled together.

I like to team a statement necklace underneath a peter pan collar to give a plain shirt a little pizzazz. It can also work perfectly with soft knit sweaters, or a plain white tee and boyfriend jeans. What’s even better is that you really don’t need to spend a fortune! There are so many gorgeous boutiques and jewellery designers who create gorgeous neck masterpieces for a price that won’t break the bank.

MisabelleSparkle is a small online boutique based right here in Melbourne. They offer gorgeous pieces in many styles and for all occasions, so no matter whether you’re new to making a statement or looking for something loud, bold and beautiful, I have no doubt you’ll find what you are looking for and will fall in love with everything on this site as I have.

I’d love to hear from you, what are you lusting over at the moment?
