Style Crush. #1

One of my favourite things about fashion is that it is open to an individual’s interpretation and can act as a reflection of personality and mood.

And because of this, one of my favourite things to do is peruse magazines, blogs, online stores and YouTube to gain inspiration for my wardrobe. Problem with this is that I have developed many a style crush. So I thought, why hide my crush? Why not share it with the world? And that, my friends, is exactly what I plan to do!

‘Style Crush’ will be a monthly feature on Meika & Me; shining a light on fellow bloggers and celebrities alike. It’s an excuse to look at individuals who have undeniable style and perhaps gain some inspiration for your own wardrobe as I have too.

So without further adieu, prepare to crush.

Rumi Neely.

While I’m sure she needs no introduction, Rumi is the brains and the beauty behind Fashion Toast and is likely one of the very first fashion blogs I began following. She simply oozes ‘cool’ and has all the essential elements of a style blogger.

Whilst often sporting a monochromatic canvas, she uses different textures and fabrics to create statement, and often layers upon layers to really lift an outfit.

Rumi Neely, girl you can do no wrong.

Who is your style crush of the moment?

Meika & Me

Ruby Muse.

I really love love. I do, I just can’t help it. After the weekend I’ve just had, I’m feeling more loved up, giddy and ‘butterflies in the tummy’ than usual.

Two of my very dear friends met and fell in love a few years ago and after watching their love grow and blossom, I was one of the lucky few invited to celebrate their very special day as they tied the knot in a beautiful winery a few hours outside of Melbourne.

The third best thing about attending a wedding; besides celebrating all things love and romance, and spending a day with your nearest and dearest dancing to amazingly and strategically formed music playlists, is shopping for a new outfit!

Ruby Muse Boutique ( is a small online boutique that sells everything from cocktail dresses, to bohemian maxi skirts and even my favourite fake tanning product; the Loving Tan! I stumbled upon this boutique through Instagram and now find it is my go to site when in need of a little style pick me up. They also ship internationally!

For the Wedding day, I opted for the ‘In My Life Midi Dress’ and let me just say, it was love at first sight!

This dress is a pencil style, but is in no way restrictive like other pencil skirts or dresses I have tried. It is priced at $80, and the material is 100% cotton making it extremely breathable and lightweight. It is a gorgeous navy blue with a large white floral print; perfect for those of us a little scared of bright, loud prints but still want a little something extra special.

The thin, double straps and high neckline is my favourite part of this dress. I am quite big busted, so always like a slightly higher neckline; I’m a big boobed girl wishing for little ones. The grass is always greener on the other side, right?

On my feet, I wore my favourite heels in my wardrobe (and quite possibly the world), the Senso ‘Robyn I’. I won’t lie; these heels will hurt the hip pocket a little but are truly worth every dollar. They are extremely well made, comfortable to wear and easy to walk in, even across grassy vineyards! They also guarantee compliments, so are good for a little ego boost.

Photo credit and a big thank-you to my gorgeous best friend for making me feel beautiful. Not just this weekend, but every day.

Answer the 11 questions given to you by the person who nominated you for the award

Nominate 11 blogs/bloggers who themselves have 200 or less followers.

Think up 11 different questions for the people you are nominating to answer.

Then you need to notify your nominees so that they know and can answer and join in!

1.What are you really, really good at?

Job interviews. It may sound strange, but I really am.

That’s not to say that I don’t get scared or feel like I’m about to vom right before going in, because I do, but it’s these nerves that I absolutely thrive upon.

2.What is your favourite time of the year?

Without a doubt, it’s New Years Eve. There is something about that time of year, where I’m still feeling jolly from Santa’s visit and planning for the year ahead. I love spending NYE with my best friends, most of whom live all over the country and come home the holidays, so it’s an opportunity for us to come together, reflect on the year just had and share our ambitions and things we’re looking forward to for the year ahead.

3.Favorite high street store?

Witchery is my absolutely favourite (see my recent post Animal Instinct to find out why). But I also love Topshop, H&M and Portmans.

4.Favorite beauty product of all time?

The Porefessional and Hoola by Benefit. In fact everything by Benefit is wonderful. It’s fair priced, high quality, varied in range and has gorgeous, unique packaging! I always look forward to Christmas time when they bring out their Christmas gift packs! I have a habit of approaching the gift packs the way I approach a block of chocolate with the boyfriend; one for you, two for me…

5.Who inspires you?

My sister inspires me because of her free spirit, carefree, down to earth attitude. She approaches life full of wanderlust and love and it’s amazing to watch her grow into the beautiful, fulfilled woman she has become.

6.What is your favourite movie?

This is hard! I’ve thought long and hard and have narrowed it down to the three movies I have watched the most, can narrate with the plot and enjoy watching the same as I did the first time: Never Been Kissed (who doesn’t love Drew Barrymore?), Dirty Dancing (ummmm, Patrick Swayze? Babe!) and Pitch Perfect (I love a good musical probably more than your average, and this movie does it for me in all the right places)

7.Your Favourite beauty brand?

Benefit and Revlon.

8.Why did you start blogging?

Mainly to meet new people from all over the world and interact with people who share common interests to me. I spend a lot of time talking life, fashion, and love with my friends and family and saw this as an opportunity to share my passions and dreams in a different space. There’s something so wonderful about the blogging community, and I look forward to growing my blog, learning from others and sharing what I love.

9.What is your favourite post that you’ve written?

The Beginning. This is my very first post, and what started it all. One day I’ll look back to my first post and smile.

10.What makes you smile when you’re having a bad day?

Music. I have a varied taste in music and love everything from Ed Sheeran to Disney tunes. What I find myself listening to most is Angus and Julia Stone and Becky CJ. Becky CJ is a singer/songwriter from the UK whose voice gives my shivers every time I hear it. She seems so sweet and down to earth in her YouTube videos and I smile each and every time I hear her voice. Check her out here:

11.What is your favourite ever lipstick shade?

My favourite lip product is actually a lip stain. It’s the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in 030 Smitten Eprise.

For you to answer…

What’s your favourite thing about your blog?

If you could go back in time to a past time in your life, when would that be and why?

How would you describe your style?

Who or what is your greatest love?

What is your favourite meal?

Do you prefer shopping in store or online?

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

What are your career goals?

What is your favourite fragrance?

What is your go-to, never fail outfit?

What is your favourite quote?

(I apologise If I have nominated you and your blog has more than 200 followers; please don’t be offended! If you’re blog didn’t have a subscriber count, I nominated you because I like your blog!)

Top tips for getting through university.

As I enter the third week of the first semester of my final year at university, I am unsure whether to feel excited that I’m on the home stretch or overwhelmed at the mere thought of all the hours of lectures, essays, sleepless nights, stress, exam preparation, coffee and more coffee that lies ahead in 2015.

I chose to not pursue University immediately after completing my V.C.E at high school. Instead, I opted for a gap year, that then turn into two and three and four. At the time I watched my boyfriend and best friends work their way through their Bachelor degrees, graduate and eventually start a career while I continued to plod along through life; happy and content, but always wondering what life lay ahead for me.

Now, well and truly in the swing of things and two semesters away from putting on that renowned gown and cap, I share with you my top tips for getting through University:

Choose wisely:

When I say choose wisely, I mean choose a study discipline that you are going to enjoy. It isn’t the be all and end all if you choose wrong, in fact it wouldn’t be the first time someone has started a degree and changed through the course, or even finished an entire degree only to discover that’s not the right career choice for them. Think about what you like, what you dislike, what you enjoy and what you absolutely dread doing. Do you like working with numbers or do you like reading, writing and working with words? Do you like working with and helping people or would you prefer to work autonomously in a laboratory?

Either way, you want to focus your studies around something that you are going to enjoy learning and increasing your knowledge of. I assure you that this will make learning the content much easier and dare I say it, Fun!

Get organised:

This comes naturally to some people, while others have to practice. I certainly fell in the latter of the two, but have now trained myself to be more organised than I have known myself to be in my entire 25 years of life. A full-time study load at most Australian Universities is 4 subjects per semester and I suggest structuring your subject content prior to or at the beginning of the semester.

Purchase a diary; this will become your best friend. I like to print off the subject outlines prior to the semester starting, assign a different colour to each subject and work my way through the outline marking dates in my diary of things I need to remember: lectures, tutorials, assessments due and tests. By colour coordinating each subject, it acts a visual distinction between each subject and reduces confusion. Also, by making notes in your diary of important dates you can see what lies ahead that week and the next few weeks and organise your time accordingly, so that you aren’t struggling to complete an assessment the night before due date!

(If a diary is not your thing then you could even get a yearly planner, a whiteboard, black board or even use your smart phone or tablet.)

 Get support:

Study with individuals who are going to promote your growth and development, and not distract you from the task at hand.

I absolutely love my girlfriends, but I know that when we get together we will talk boyfriends, clothes, make-up or the weather, in fact absolutely anything to avoid studying. So, although a little cut throat, I choose not to sit with them during study time. I personally choose to study alone in the University library, as I find this has minimal distractions. I’ve always hated studying at home because of the distractions of TV and food, my two weaknesses.

But that’s not to say it’s not possible to study with other people. It’s a great way of bouncing ideas off each other and lifting spirits when the semester gets a little hectic. It also allows you to test each other’s knowledge, teach each other new things as well as new ways of learning or approaching the content. Studying with other people may open your eyes to an idea you previously missed.

Getting support also comes in the form of family, or your friends outside of university, or your boyfriend/girlfriend. I love having a jam packed day of study and coming home to my boyfriend and watching movies. Lean on your support network when you’re stressed or overwhelmed, and share your excitement when you do well on that assessment you’d stressed over.

This is vital. Whatever your relaxation method, do it. It is important to remain balanced mentally, emotionally and physically during your University studies as this will ensure a clear head and focused mind. Be positive about your learning, and persevere if you are struggling or didn’t receive the mark you were hoping for.

Listen to music. Go for a run. Do yoga and meditation. Have a night out dancing with the girls. Cook a great meal. Curl up with a good book. Whatever helps you to relax is my suggestion.

And lastly, have fun. Some would say these are the best years of your life.

Hope this inspired and helped at least one of you

Animal Instinct.

With the winter months well and truly on their way to Melbourne, I am certainly embracing darker, more monochromatic colour and prints. I could pretend I do this only in the cooler months, but the fact remains that I love monochrome all year around. This outfit depicts my style on a regular day-to-day basis. I love mixing high end pieces with more affordable department store pieces, as I don’t believe one needs to spend a fortune to look chic, put together and fashionable.

Target Australia
Leopard Print Shift Dress

I have a confession to make. I, Meika&Me, am an animal-print-aholic. Yes, it is true and I’m not ashamed to say it. Animal print clothing, animal print bags, animal print shoes; I want it all. This dress from Target Australia screams stylish chic, and feels much more luxurious than you’d imagine for the price. Without breaking the budget, this shift dress skims over the body’s natural curves and accentuates the features you’d want it to. The material is slightly thick and this only benefits how the dress naturally sits, meaning it doesn’t cling to the body and ride up as you walk like some fabrics do.

It sits slightly above the knee, making it a very appropriate length for all occasions (some would say leopard print is a little cougar-esque, so length is important. Am I right girls?)

Ashley Gusset Boot

If you follow me on Instagram (@Meikaandme), or know me in real life, then you will be well aware of my long-time and unwavering love for Witchery. I’m 25 years old, but have loved this brand since my teens and believe I will continue doing so well into my elder years. If you’ve never ventured into a Witchery Store, I first ask you why? but also encourage you do so. Witchery is the epitome of style.

With elegant style cuts, luxurious fabrics and on-trend but timely wardrobe pieces; Witchery really is a one stop shop. Whether you are in the need of interview attire that will wow your prospecting manager, an outfit to wear on your Saturday night out with the girls involving one too many cocktails and boogieing until the wee hours of the morning, or a casual outfit for a picnic in the park with family, I can assure you that you will find it at Witchery. They also offer a fantastic rewards program that rewards you for spending. The more you spend, the more $$$ rewards you are given!

I purchased these boots towards the end of last year, so I’m not sure how readily available they will be. The Witchery site still has them listed, so if you are interested in purchasing these, I suggest you contact your local store. If not, they have recently released a similar style boot: the ‘Piper Ankle Boot‘.

Lack of Color
The Midnight Muse Fedora

This Fedora is my go to staple for funking up any outfit. There is something about a felt fedora to me, that feels like I could right in with Vanessa Hudgens and Cara Delevingne at the next Coachella.

Lack of Color has a vast array of colours to choose from, so you will always find the perfect hat for matching whatever outfit combo you are putting together. They won’t break the bank and are super high quality. I suggest keeping the plastic they come packaged in and storing your hat in this to avoid collecting dust and markings.

Ray Ban
Clubmasters (polarised)

My boyfriend very kindly purchased these for me as an early Christmas present last year and they have since not left my face. I love how simple they are, yet absolutely ooze cool. They seem to suit most face shapes so I can’t imagine anyone having trouble with these. They do some with polarised and unpolarised lenses, which will alter the price accordingly. I chose the black and gold Clubmasters but these sunnies can be purchased in other coloured frames and lens combinations.

Narciso Rodriguez
For Her, 100ml

Again, another Christmas present from the boyfriend (he’s great, isn’t he?). Some would say this perfume is more of a night time or winter scent, as it is quite a seductive scent. I wear this all year round no matter the season, but do like to save it for special occasions as it always makes me feel glamorous and sexy.

As I couldn’t describe a scent to save my life, here is what Myer said: “In a fuchsia sheath, for her in color brings seduction to the extreme. The ambery note of the eau de parfum is enhanced by a vanilla absolute, mysterious and bewitching, unveiling the intense sensuality of the fragrance.” Yes, exactly. What they said.
