Summer Essentials.

Here in Australia, we are now smack bang in the middle of summer and boy, has it been a scorcher!

While I make no secret of the fact that my heart is happier in the cooler, winter months, I have a number of essentials to help me get through the warmer months! So, if you’re anything like me and counting down the days until the weather drops a few degrees, then maybe some of these items will help you combat the heat.

Light Clothing

During the summer months, I live in cotton dresses. I find them easy to throw on and go, no matter what I have planned ahead for the day; offering great versatility, while also being breathable and cool. Cotton is also easy to look after in terms of wash and care, making it the perfect everyday fabric. These are some of my favourite styles, and I have included an option to suit your preferred length; mini, maxi, midi. Perfect to throw on for a day at the beach, or worn to dinner and drinks with your ladies in the warm summer evenings.

I am a HUGE hat lover all year round, but particularly in the summer months. I have pale skin with lots of freckles and find that a long day in the sun will darken the freckles on my face, across my nose and cheeks. Hats are a fantastic way to be sun smart and stylish at the same time. My absolute FAVOURITE brands are Lack of Colour and Ace of Something, both offering a variety of colours and styles that are affordable and very high quality. Hats are a great way to add a different element to your outfit, and completely change the look of an ensemble. Any one of these bad boys will have compliments flying your way left, right and centre!

A Great Bikini

I must be honest; I struggle with this every summer. Unfortunately, like many other girls, I am very body conscious and as a big busted, big bummed, curvy size 12-14, I struggle to find bikini’s I feel entirely comfortable in. Unfortunately, it’s not the styles that are letting me down, but rather the sizes, which are often too big or too small around the chest or bottom. If you have any recommendations of brands that cater to this well, please let me know! Otherwise, here are some bikini’s I’m loving this summer.

‘Cabana Rose F Cup Halter Bikini’
Top $114.95
Bottom $74.95

Zulu & Zephyr
‘Waimea Tri Cup Bikini’
$170 (now on sale for $90!)

Zulu & Zephyr
‘Rockpool Tri Cup Bikini’
$140 (now on sale for $80!)

This should actually be number one on the essentials list, as being sun smart is important for maintaining healthy and youthful skin, and avoiding melanomas and other skin cancers. My go to is the Le Tan 50+ Coconut Lotion, which smells like a summer dream! This product doesn’t have that awful ‘sunscreen’ smell that is usually prominent, and if you are a coconut lover, you’ll go gaga for this; I promise you.

Roundie towel

These are adorable! Why would you have an ordinary rectangular shaped beach towel, when you can have one of these? While so many brands are producing round beach towels now, The Beach People are the original creators and offer 10 different prints to suit your tastes. Use them at the beach, a picnic in the park or lazing around in your backyard!

‘The Dream Time’

Another staple all year round, my sunnies tend to get more of a workout during the warmer months. I am an avid sunglasses collector and often prefer to buy cheap, in case I lose or break them (because who hasn’t done this before?!). I do have a pair of the Ray Ban Clubmasters and absolutely love them, but I live in constant fear that I am going to sit on them every time I take them off! I find I have a fairly universal shaped face, allowing me to wear many styles with ease, and I love to play around with different frames, lenses and colour combinations to add a different element to my outfit.

To ensure my make up stays in place and goes on smoothly, I love to use the POREfessional Face Primer by Benefit. I was wearing make up for years before I even considered introducing a primer into my make up routine, but when I discovered this product, I knew I was onto a winner. I wear this underneath my foundation, and find that it reduces the appearance of my pores, smoothes and softens out my complexion, while mattifying the skin and keeping my make up in place for much longer than without this product. I highly recommend giving this one a go.

Mattifying Powder

This has been a Holy Grail product of mine for a few years now. I have combination skin, but find I get shiny through my T-zone as the day progresses. To combat this, I like to use the Australis Fresh & Flawless Pressed Powder to set my liquid foundation, and as a touch up throughout the day when needed. This product is a 2-in-1 foundation and pressed powder, so can be used on its own as a very light coverage foundation.

I am a pale skinned girl who dreams of having a golden, sun kissed bonze tan naturally. Alas, I will forever be dreaming, as time in the sun usually results in the following cycle: white-pink-beetroot red sunburn-pink-white again. I’ve previously done a review on my favourite tanning product, which is the Loving Tan Deluxe Bronzing Mousse in Dark. Check out my review here!

Whether your a summer beach bum or share my love of winter, I hope you’re enjoying these months with family, friends and happy times.

What a whirlwind of a year 2015 was!

I don’t know about you, but I feel like I blinked and the year was over. 2015 brought about many highs, as well as some lows, and I am now feeling excited to move into a new year and see what adventures lie ahead for me.

I feel I must also address that I have been M.I.A for a couple of months now. Between finishing my University degree, planning for my big move back home to Melbourne (did I ever mention I’ve been living in Townsville, North Queensland for the last few years?), temporarily moving in with my Granny-in-law who doesn’t have Wi-Fi, and dealing with the sad loss of a dear family member; I’ve been feeling a little misplaced.

But I’m back, and can’t tell you how natural it feels to be sitting at my laptop putting together this post. I certainly didn’t want to leave 2015 behind without taking a trip down memory lane, after all, December saw my one year blogging anniversary! So lets take a look back at the year that was and in case you missed them, here is the top 5 Meika & Me posts of 2015.

Spring Racing

Spring Racing #2

When I started Meika & Me, I sought it to be an extension of myself, a place where I can share my dreams, my passions and my zest for life in a medium that allowed me to express my personality. This is very much still the case, and I have big plans for Meika & Me in 2016 involving new content, new ideas and of course, more than enough fashion, style and life to inspire your tastes.

Here’s to 2016 together!

Meika & Me

Top tips to help you de-stress.

It feels like such a long time since I have sat down to my laptop and written content for Meika & Me. I’m currently in the midst of a roller coaster few weeks! With the final exams of my university degree just a short week away and a decision made to relocate back to my home city Melbourne next month, my mind has been feeling a little chaotic and stressed.

Naturally, I am quite a highly-strung individual who tends to wear her stresses quite openly and loudly! As I know many readers of Meika & Me are in a similar position to me, with upcoming university and school exams, I do have a few tips and tricks up my sleeve on how I like to de-stress and I’d love to share these with you. And, even if you’re not studying, these tips can still be used to relax after a hard day at work or dealing with life’s little hurdles.

Take time out

When feeling stressed, sometimes it is a good idea to take some time out away from what is causing you feelings of high stress or anxiety. Sometimes, a simple 10 minutes time out can rejuvenate the mind and allow you to return with a fresh perspective. I love to listen to music during my time out and find that this definitely alters my mood. You could also have a hot bath, eat a nice meal or phone a friend.

This is one tip I often need to remind myself to do! When you exercise, your body releases chemicals called endorphins, which induce a positive feeling in your body. I’m someone who hates going to the gym, but it is without a doubt that once I’m finished working out, I feel more energised, invigorated and happy. If you’re feeling stressed, do something to release these endorphins; go to the gym, take a long walk, have a dance. Just get your body moving!

Get creative

This is a great outlet for relieving stress and relaxing. Utilise your creativity and draw or paint a picture or write a poem or story. Recently, adult colouring books have become increasingly popular! These are just like the colouring you used to do as a child, but the images are a lot more complex and there is certainly something very nostalgic about channelling your inner child!

This is a new concept to me, and I’m a long way away from successfully reaching a meditative trans like state. But I do enjoy taking the time out to listen to guided meditation, focus on my breathing, and quieten my chaotic mind. I like to use the Calm app, which allows you tailor your meditation by choosing background music and sounds, as well as the length of time, to suit your preferences.

Get a good night’s sleep

This one is obvious. I’m a firm believer in getting a good night’s sleep. I have friends at University who will stay up all night before an exam, cramming last minute content and feeling stressed about what they know and don’t know at that point. I will never, ever do this. Sometimes it is best to just step away from the situation, switch off your technology and head to bed. Getting enough restful sleep will allow you to approach stressful situations more calmly and effectively, and ensure you feel your healthy best.

Let me know what you do to de-stress, I would love to know!

Summer Slides.

It is no secret that when summertime comes around, so too does a new trend in summertime footwear! From gladiators to flatforms, from espadrilles to the ever faithful thongs (or flip flops for my American readers!), there really is a sandal to suit your personal taste.

The sandal I am loving at the moment and a trend I see going nowhere fast, is the slide – the perfect balance between classic luxury and comfort, ensuring it will easily tie in with your summer wardrobe.

Imagine your slides paired with a floaty white summer dress, light wash denim shorts or even worn with some structured cigarette pants on a cooler night out.

These are the 5 slides I’m loving for the Spring/Summer!

Sol Sana ‘Lucy’

If you follow me on Instagram (follow Meika & Me here!) then you’d have already seen these bad boys. Available in 4 colours including black, blush, gold and a black fluffy pair, these are high my current want list. I’ve even asked my boyfriend to think about purchasing these for me as a graduation present. Now I just need to decide which colour I want most!

Birkenstock ‘Arizona’

I actually already own this style in black, but am keen to get my hands on the tan or navy colour! Birkenstocks are much like vegemite, you either love them or you hate them, and I’m definitely the former of the two. The sole actually molds to the shape of your foot, which results in them feeling much like slippers after a few wears!

Senso ‘Eddy’

Senso can do no wrong in my opinion and the ‘Eddy’ is no exception. Available in black and tan, these could be dressed up and worn to casual cocktails on a warm summer night with friends. The studs create a point of difference and add an element of texture to an outfit.

Givenchy ‘Logo Rubber Sandal Slide’

If you’re a fashion lover, I have no doubt you have seen these all over the fashion blogosphere. From blogger Amanda Shadforth at Oracle Fox to YouTube’s Lexi of Fashion Filth, these summer slides are widely admired and seem to have set the precedent for summer footwear. While well out of my budget, a girl can dream right?

Windsor Smith ‘Bicker’

I love the distinction the pairing of a thick and thin strap makes! It makes them feel quite chic and I’m imagining these worn with some structured trousers and a loose white tee. These are available in black, tan and a black and white combo – which I love!

As always, let me know what summer footwear trends you’re loving? Do you love any of the featured styles?

Spring Racing. #2

Some of you may have seen my most recent post detailing my Spring Racing ensemble for the RSL Townsville Cup. Well, I’m back with part two!

I’m very lucky to have a gorgeous gal pal who allows me to style her, much like the many store mannequins I dressed during my time working in visual merchandising!

The reason for this part two piece is because style is unique and distinctive between individuals and this will give you two very different looks, both of which you may be able to draw inspiration from for your spring racing get up!

Top – Bardot
Skirt – Bardot
Clutch – Colette by Colette Hayman
Shoes – MissShop by Myer
Hat – Myer (this ‘Lack of Color‘ one is my pick for a similar option!)

For this look we chose a monochrome palette of black and charcoal grey. We matched this fine knit pencil skirt to a somewhat casual fedora, and let the black leather strap accent this spaghetti strap cropped top. To bring some light to entire outfit, we chose a neutral nude clutch bag and heels, and found this complimented it perfectly.

Renee was a little skeptical about wearing a fedora to the races, fearing that it may be too casual, but as you can see, it’s all about what you pair it with! If this isn’t channeling her inner Lara Bingle-Worthington, then I don’t what is. Sporting a low, messy chic bun also made the look feel more dressed up.

A big thank-you to my bestie Renee for allowing me to feature her on Meika & Me.

What do you think? Is this outfit your style?

Spring Racing.

The Spring Racing season in Australia is a favourite pastime for many. It’s an opportunity for the guys and gals to dress up; boys in suave suits or dapper chinos, button down shirts and bow ties, and the girls wearing bright, detailed and exquisitely extravagant hats and fascinators. It is also an opportunity to create memories with good friends, drink some champagne and maybe if you’re lucky, win a bet or two on a horse race!

This weekend just past, I was fortunate enough to attend the RSL Townsville Cup Day at Cluden Racecourse. While regional town races are less comparable to the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival in terms of scale and grandeur, the Townsville cup stills draws in quite the crowd, with locals and groups from smaller country towns nearby making the most of a fun day out.

Striped T-shirt Dress.

Spring has well and truly sprung here in Australia, which means the sun is out and the weather is warming. Although, where I currently live in the regional town of Townsville, located in Far North Queensland, the Winter season seemed over in a matter of a blink.

In the warmer months, I find myself reaching for clothing items that are comfortable and easy, requiring little thought. This Cotton On T-shirt dress is the perfect example of a staple summer wardrobe item for me. I have this dress is four different prints/colours, but find this one to be my most worn (it’s that stripe obsession!)

The T-shirt dress is versatile and can be worn on it’s own or with an chambray shirt like this one I have tied around my waist. Pair it with some white converse chucks, some Birkenstock sandals or even a pair of ankle booties and you’re good to go.

Lust List. #3

It’s been a very busy couple of months for me. Between holidaying and the commencement of my last semester EVER at University (9 weeks to go, but whose counting?), I’ve barely had time to sit down and do what I love most; write.

But being busy has not stopped me perusing the Internet and magazines during every spare minute, and lusting over items to add to my overflowing and always growing wardrobe!

So, what is Meika & Me lusting over right now? I’m glad you asked.

The Midi-Heel.

Not quite a high heel and definitely higher than a kitten heel, I’ve labeled it the ‘midi-heel’ and I am loving this trend! The perfect shoe for Spring/Summer time and offers great versatility as the height allows it to be worn casually or more dressed up, depending your taste.

I personally love this pair from Sportsgirl, which is in a gorgeous pale tan colour, which compliments this season’s 70’s trend.

Imagine these sandals with a floaty floral dress, or even paired with a pair of light wash boyfriend jeans to add a more feminine touch.

Jo Malone London.

I am so glad that Jo Malone has finally made it’s way over to Australia. Stocked in both David Jones and Myer Melbourne City, Jo Malone offers an extensive range of ‘unexpected’ scents that are elegantly lush. The packaging is gorgeous and would look beautiful on any girl’s dressing table. I love the scent ‘Blackberry & Bay’, which is a vibrant fruity scent of blackberry, bay and wood.

Dior ‘So Real’ Sunglasses.

I’d actually have to win the lottery to afford these beauties, but that can’t stop a girl from dreaming right? These sunglasses have been doing the rounds lately on the blogosphere and Instagram, and their unique shape and large colour range are adding to their popularity. I personally love the pink colour, but they also come in black, clear, tortoiseshell and blue among many other colour combos. These sunglasses are a statement piece, but we’re thinking it’s definitely the right kind to make.

Mansur Gavriel Bucket Bag.

Another dreamy lust piece that is well out of my price range, but high on the want list. This bucket bag is the perfect handbag to suit any style. Made in Italy using Italian vegetable leather, this gorgeous bag can be customized by selecting the lining colour to best suit your taste. I personally love the black bag with the charcoal lining, but with the large colour range for the external leather and the lining, you really can create the ultimate bag for you!

Tell me, what are you lusting over at the moment?

Meika & Me

Bali, Indonesia.

I’ve fallen in love.

Yes, it’s true. But it is not a person that has won my heart, but rather the Indonesian Island called Bali.

I’d always heard mixed reviews about Bali, with people likening it to vegemite; you either love it or you hate it. Maybe it’s because Indonesia has such a sentimental place in my heart after learning and loving the language for six years during High School, but I have only fond feelings for the place and am counting down the days until I can return. I actually won’t have to wait long to visit again, as my partner Jesse and I booked plane tickets two days after arriving home to visit Bali again in November. This will coincide with our 7-year anniversary, which makes the trip all the more special.

This was my first time overseas, and this trip has certainly enlightened the ‘travel bug’ in me. I travelled with a group of long time friends and we stayed for a week, splitting our time between Gili Trawangan and Seminyak. From the people to the culture, to the street markets and the architecture, this island is full of life and colour.

Here are a few of my favourite photographs from the trip:

Loving Tan Review.

I’ve been a fake tanner for as long as I can remember. I have vivid memories from my early high school years when tanning products were certainly not what they are today, and combined with my sloppy application (I put that down to inexperience and laziness) would lead to often streaky and frequently orange legs! (For some reason, a younger self chose to only tan her legs; leaving the rest of her body a snowy shade of white).

I’ve been using Loving Tan for about 6 months now and am still so surprised when I meet girls who have not heard of this product! It was an appointment at the beautician that inspired this blog post. Whilst waxing my eyebrows, my beautician and I were discussed tanning products and when I mentioned Loving Tan, she exclaimed, “Yes! I LOVE Loving Tan but not many people seem to know about it.”

And then I thought; that has got to change!

Loving Tan has fast replaced all tanning products in my bathroom cupboard. It is an Australian product and self-proclaimed breakthrough in the industry. Put simply, it is a tanning product “made by tan lovers for tan lovers”.

loving tan

Loving Tan is available in a 2 hour (medium & dark) and 8 hour (medium, dark & ultra dark) mousse formula and retails for $34.95 – $39.95 AUD. Available in Australia and Internationally, you can purchase your tan here. They even offer free shipping for orders over $50, which is an amazing bonus!

For this review, I have used the 2 hour Express Deluxe Bronzing Mousse in ‘dark’.

20150814_091734 (1)

The tanning product has an instant bronzer in it making the application process very simple as you can visibly see where you are placing the product and where you’ve missed. Directly after application, I do find this product to be quite pink on my skin, which at first was a little daunting but this is not the colour it remains so don’t be alarmed. The tan has a pleasantly nice smell, and definitely does not have that ‘fake tan’ smell like other products I’ve used in the past. It is also very quick drying and doesn’t feel too sticky on the skin.

I use a fake tan mitt to apply the product and this helps to work the product into the skin and also avoids any mishaps with fake tanned hands (we’ve all been there!). Loving Tan have also released a back applicator, and must be one of the first to do so as I have not seen a product like it on the market. I absolutely loved the idea of the back applicator as my boyfriend hates tanning my back for me and it’s difficult to do myself, but I must be honest; I hated this product. I find the sponge applicator too small, which makes it difficult to spread across the back area. I also found it difficult to use in terms of getting the motions right.

*The above pictures depicting my legs before, straight after application, and after shower have not been edited or retouched. They were taken in the same place, however different times of the day have resulted in different natural lighting settings.

I’m quite pale, as is visible in the before photo above and I find this tan to be very natural on the skin. Thanks to the dual active self tanner ingredients, this tanning mousse ensures a natural looking tan without the streaks or orange undertones. The ‘after’ image above was taken after showering after allowing the tan to develop for the recommended 2 hours. As expected, if you leave the tan on longer you will achieve a much darker shade. The tan is long lasting provided you look after your tan. To do so, moisturise daily and this will ensure your tan fades off evenly.

I cannot recommend this product enough! For any self tan lovers out there, I assure you that you will be loving your tan with Loving Tan.
